Best Practices for Posting Jobs:

  • Be sure the job description is accurate and clear

  • Find a good balance of being detailed without being too lengthy. Use bullet points and formatting

  • Don’t make the expiration date too far out. You can always go back in and renew it

  • Optimize for SEO by using keywords that someone might use when searching for this type of position online

  • Clearly identify the requirements. Don’t list something as a requirement if it really isn’t a requirement or if you are willing to train on that skill

  • Be sure to include how to apply and what might be required of an applicant (does your organization require cover letters, transcripts, etc.?)

Visit Handshake’s Help Center for access to short videos, tutorials, and materials that will help you navigate the system.

Recruitment Procedures and Guidelines for Employers

The NCTC Career Center offers services to employers in accordance with the Principles for Ethical Professional Practice for Career Service Professionals outlined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). The NCTC Career Center expects employers to comply with laws associated with local, state, and federal entities, including but not limited to EEO compliance, immigration, and affirmative action. Employers are also expected to follow the Principles for Ethical Professional Practice for Employers.

Standards of Employer Conduct:

Confidentiality of Student Information:

By activating their accounts in Handshake, students provide the Career Center authorization to release employment materials to those selected prospective employers.  Employment professionals must maintain the confidentiality of all student information released to them, regardless of the source. This means that there should be no disclosure of student information to another organization without the prior written consent of the student, unless necessitated by health and/or safety considerations, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

The Career Center reserves the right to refuse service to organizations or individuals due to any of the following:

  • requiring personal information at the time of application, such as bank and social security information

  • misrepresentation-providing dishonest information or absence of information

  • fraud

  • harassment of NCTC students, alumni, faculty or staff

  • compromising FERPA guidelines and confidentiality requirements

  • failure to adhere to Career Center employer guidelines

  • any violation of North Central Texas College rules and regulations

  • any violation of local, state, or federal laws

Posting Positions

North Central Texas College utilized Handshake as its online job and internship board. Employers are encouraged to post current and active job openings with us through Handshake. Postings should have a reasonable expiration date and not be active for a long period of time. Once a posting expires, it is the responsibility of the employer to repost it.

The following guidelines should be used for employers posting a position in Handshake:

  • The posted job must clearly indicate the employing organization name, complete company description, mailing address, telephone number, and have an official company website.

  • The posted job must have a contact name, telephone number and valid email address in order to be approved on Handshake. The preferred email address should be reflective of the company and not a personal email (Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail or other).

  • The company/employer must not solicit or sell their products or services.

  • The company/employer must not be a multi-level marketing organization.

  • The posted job must offer employment and not a business opportunity or venture.

  • Full disclosure of any employer/employee contracts must be presented prior to interviewing potential candidates.

  • NCTC Career Services reserves the right to randomly screen all jobs posted on Handshake, and we reserve the right to refuse individual postings.

Experiential education opportunities (i.e. internships and co‐ops) are required for students in many of our career and technical degree programs. We encourage employers to post opportunities that align with our programs. If you are posting an internship/co-op position, please identify if it is paid or unpaid.

North Central Texas College does not have a designated physical job bulletin board on any campus. Brochures and job flyers may be dropped off at any of our Career Center locations; however, we do not guarantee distribution. The best way to share your openings with us is through Handshake.

In-Home Positions or Individual Postings

North Central Texas College does not post or allow postings for any in-home positions for individuals (nanny, tutor, in-home care, etc.) unless they are through a legitimate company that brokers these positions. We have the right to refuse individual postings.

Third-Party Agencies (Staffing Companies)

A third-party employment service is an agency, organization or individual recruiting candidates for employment opportunities other than for its own needs. Third party recruiters will be allowed to post positions if they provide, in the job posting, the name of the organization for which the third party is providing recruiting services. The third party recruiter must also provide contact information for the organization for which the third party is providing recruiting services to the Career Center.

  • The third party agency must state that it will not charge any fees to students.

  • The third party recruiter may only disclose student information for the open and advertised position. Any other disclosure of student information must have the written consent of the student.

  • Third party recruiters may not attend career fairs unless they are recruiting internally for their own office. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Multi-Level Marketing Organizations (Network Marketing)

Multi-level Marketing Organizations are not eligible to participate in Career Services activities including but not limited to posting jobs or events in Handshake, On-Campus Tabling or Recruitment, etc.

Career Services considers organizations that engage in the following conduct to be Network Marketing Organizations:

  • Sponsoring an individual to set up their own business for the purpose of selling products or services and/or recruiting other individuals to set up their own business.

  • Requiring an initial cash or capital investment, account balance, or similar fiscal requirements from this individual, with the organization itself serving as an umbrella or parent corporation. The initial investment may include, but is not limited to, such things as direct payment of a fixed fee, payment to attend an orientation or training session, and/or purchase of a starter kit.

  • Compensation is in the form of straight commission, fees from others under the business owner’s sponsorship in the organization, and/or a percentage of sales generated by others.

 On-Campus Recruiting and Tabling

  • Employers must receive approval from NCTC Career Services for on-campus recruitment or awareness activities. This includes but is not limited to recruitment or awareness tables, classroom visits, passing out flyers or brochures, etc.

  • To request approval for on-campus recruitment, please reach out to careerservices@nctc.edu.

Exceptions to Policies and Guidelines

The Career Center reserves the right to make exceptions to these policies and guidelines as warranted by special circumstances, i.e., in certain situations deemed to be acceptable and beneficial to our students, the Career Center, the college, or recruiters using our services. Such exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Any exception made does not constitute a change in policy, nor is there a guarantee that this same decision will apply in the future.
