McMurray establishes scholarship for montague county students
Janet McMurray of Bowie, Texas, has established the Clyde and Janet McMurray Red River Promise Scholarship Fund through a donation to the NCTC Foundation.
Janet and her late husband Clyde, both lifetime educators, are longtime supporters of North Central Texas College, and have been active in their community since moving to Bowie in 1980.
The two met at Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1959 and were married in 1961.
Clyde was a member of several civic organizations in Bowie and served on the 4B Board that helped bring NCTC to Bowie. Janet has also served with many organizations in the community and remains an active member of the Montage County Retired Personnel and Texas Retired Teacher Association. In 2019 she was named the Jim Bowie Days Pioneer Queen.
After retiring in 1998, Janet and Clyde opened the Gazebo Bed and Breakfast in their home. In their retirement, the two enjoyed traveling across the world, visiting many countries, including the UK, Greece, Morocco, Italy, and more.
Clyde and Janet have two children, Tom, married to Charlotte, and Susan, married to Marc, and five grandchildren.
“Clyde loved the school business and said that he never worked a day in his life because he was so dedicated to his students,” said Janet. “But, of course, his greatest loves were his children and grandchildren… and TCU, where he attended many functions and games.”
This scholarship will be awarded to Red River Promise students from Montague County ISDs. The Red River Promise provides graduating seniors with varied support services and covers the cost of tuition and fees at NCTC for up to two years or 60 credit hours.
